The Boss Of Your Own Room

Whoever said that parenting was easy should be given a certificate, a plaque, better yet a monument in his or her honor. Barely two years into my stint as a mom and I’m already pulling at my hair in trying to appease my sister’s three year-olds. Out of kindness I agreed to take in my nephews into my humble apartment whilst my sister struggled with work overseas. As they say no good deed goes unpunished. Don’t get me wrong, I love my darling nephews to bits. Though it won’t hurt if they follow a normal sleeping pattern – say, 9 pm instead of 4 am, eat off plates and not off floors, stay out of my neat study and stick to just one theme for their shared room. I don’t exactly remember being a three year-old, but pretty sure I had little to no idea of what trompe l’oeil murals were at the time, unlike my nephews who wanted said mural in their room and faux painting in Los Angeles to go with it. Since they spend so much time in their room – I made it clear they were not allowed elsewhere in the house after the terrible incident in my study - I’m guessing they’re prone to getting tired of their surroundings, hence the need to change the themed LA murals every so often. Don’t mistake me for a child abuser of some sort, their room’s equipped with all necessary amenities and they seem to have no problem staying there day in day out but for play dates on weekends. Good thing our apartment complex was also home to some local designers and artists. As the song goes, everyone is someone in LA, so it shouldn’t be a surprise to bump into a famous Los Angeles muralist by the elevators. With the help of my next-door neighbor, a celebrity interior designer who does color consultation in Los Angeles, my nephews’ never-ending mural projects weren’t as hassling as perceived. If only the two could be easier to please. Having had one too many murals paintings done at home, I could more or less pass as an expert in children’s murals, at least a self-proclaimed one. There are three basic things you have to consider when decorating the walls of kids’ rooms – theme, art and materials. Basically like being in art class, you have to choose the theme for the project, select the particular art you want to execute and get the right materials needed for the artwork. Note that the kids have to be in on the whereabouts – their room, their decision. That being said, I have no choice but succumb to every whim when it comes to their little sanctuary. After all they are the bosses of their room. Ah, I could only hope that they don’t forget what a good aunt I was to them when they grow up.
